From California to kitchens around the world, poke bowls have become a go-to for fresh, flavorful, and health-forward dining. Poke bowls are fresh, customizable, and full of bold flavors in every bite. So, what is a poke bowl?

A poke bowl is a Hawaiian dish that consists of cubed raw fish, along with other toppings, all on top of rice or greens. The correct Hawaiian pronunciation of poke is "poh-kay," which translates loosely to "to slice" or "cut crosswise into pieces".

At Sweetfin, we honor poke’s Hawaiian roots while infusing it with California-inspired ingredients and globally driven flavors. Our poke bowls are always fresh, chef-crafted, gluten-free, and a healthy dining option, no matter your lifestyle.

In this blog, we’ll explore what a poke bowl is, its Hawaiian roots, the essential bases, proteins, and sauces, plus tips on ordering or building your own chef-crafted Sweetfin bowl.

The Origins & History of Poke

A poke bowl is a colorful and fully customizable meal that can be made with different ingredients. It usually starts with marinated raw fish on a base such as rice or greens, and then a variety of tasty toppings.

Poke originated in Hawaiian culture, when fishermen prepared quick, nourishing meals using the freshest cuts of fish seasoned simply with sea salt, seaweed, and kukui nuts. They would often take the freshest cuts of fish, likely whatever they had caught that day, and simply shred it with seaweed, sea salt, and crushed kukui nuts (a local nut that has a rich buttery quality).

These intimate preparations were simply focused on showcasing the flavor and quality of the fish. Poke soon began to grow beyond a simple meal and became a staple food in Hawaiian culture.

Soon enough, poke transitioned from the fishing boat to large family gatherings, beach get-togethers, and traditional backyard luaus. Although poke can look similar to sushi, the two dishes are markedly different in origin, flavor, and preparation.

Poke vs. Sushi

Traditionally, poke is cubes of raw fish that are marinated and served in a bowl over rice or greens and garnished with a variety of toppings and sauces.

In contrast, sushi is sliced raw fish (or other items) that is floated on top of vinegared rice, usually rolled in seaweed.

Sweetfin honors the essence of traditional poke while elevating it with a California style: fresh, bold, and chef-driven. Our menu shows that balance of freshness, boldness, and constant change. From unique sauces to globally inspired toppings, Sweetfin brings healthful creativity to every bowl.

Common Poke Bowl Ingredients

One of the great benefits of a poke bowl is its versatility. Whether you're in the mood for something light and refreshing or hearty and filling, there's an option to fit the bill for every taste and dietary preference.

  • Base: A poke bowl usually starts with a base, which is the foundation of the bowl. Common base options are sushi rice, brown rice, quinoa, or mixed greens, presenting a range of textures and nutritional profiles to fit your mood or health objectives.
  • Protein: Next is your protein, the star of the bowl. With ample choices for seafood lovers and plant-eaters, in total, you'll find something to satisfy. Ahi tuna and salmon are classic and easily recognized for their freshness and flavor.
  • Sauce: Next comes the signature poke sauce. From the sweet and earthy savoriness of shoyu (soy sauce-based), to the citrus and brightness of ponzu, to spicy mayo with its hearty kick, to nutty miso sesame - any sauce that you prefer to include delivers depth to every bite.

Why Ingredient Quality Matters

In the history of Hawaiian culture, poke was never about complexity. It was about taking what was freshly caught, keeping it simple, and letting the natural flavors shine.

At Sweetfin, we’re proud to carry that tradition forward, but with a California sensibility that reflects the way people want to eat today: fresh, nourishing, and thoughtfully prepared. That’s why we make a real, daily commitment to quality at every step.

We source local, sustainably caught fish, partner with growers for seasonal, high-quality produce, and make all our sauces in-house from scratch each day. It's not the fastest way. But it’s the right way. You can also go through our core values.
